More regular listed items from the most recent listing period are showing up in the catalog, including Aperol which was unavailable during its transition from online-only to in-store. Also we are graced with Three Olives Purple Vodka.

Purple? Since when is that a flavor?

Apparently it tastes like "crushed grape," and it is not to be confused with the existing Three Olives Grape Vodka. It took a bit of searching to find that, too. The Internet appears to be much more interested in the fact that Lil' Kim is promoting it than what it actually tastes like.

Anyway.

Also arriving this month is Herbsaint Original, which is an absinthe-like anise-flavored liqueur. It's a replica of the original Herbsaint liqueur that was introduced soon after the repeal of Prohibition as a substitute for absinthe, which was banned in the US at the time. By law, the ban only covered products containing wormwood, which Herbsaint did not. Regardless, the US government prohibited the use of the word "absinthe" on any liquor label--a restriction that was enforced until Kubler convinced the government to lift it back in 2002.

I find it to be a much more complex liqueur than its "modern formula" descendent, giving true absinthes a run for their money. At $35 it's a great introduction to the world of absinthe, as well as a solid spirit in its own right.

Landy, Cognac Ferrand's value-priced line, is listed again after moving from Southern to Majestic. Remember, Majestic now has a three-bottle minimum on all their SLO spirits. The new minimums may not be fully updated in the PLCB catalog yet, but they're in effect.

Jim Beam produced a custom Knob Creek label for the David Bradford House in Washington, PA, where the Whiskey Rebellion was organized in 1794. At the end of July they will be hosting their annual Whiskey Rebellion dinner, with Frederick Booker Noe III, ambassador for Jim Beam Brands, as their special guest. Of course, the evening will include a tasting of the Beam Small Batch bourbons. Hopefully, those attending will appreciate the irony of a Kentucky distiller sponsoring the Whiskey Rebellion dinner: the Kentucky bourbon industry owes its start to George Washington's decision to ruthlessly quash the Rebellion, driving the distillers of western Pennsylvania and Virginia to the frontierland of Kentucky, where they could make their whiskey without being bothered by the tax man.

Also showing up this week is the new Del Maguey Vida mezcal, which is Ron Cooper's attempt to make a mezcal better suited (read: cheaper) for use in cocktails. It's decent stuff, but it's competing with several other mezcals at that same price point including Scorpion and Joya Azul.

Caribou Crossing is a new Canadian whisky from the folks at Buffalo Trace. Although Canadian whisky isn't usually seen as a serious competitor to high-end bourbons and scotches, a few producers are trying to break the mold and create a whisky with some real flavor. Caribou Crossing appears to live up to the challenge, judging by John Hansell's glowing review.
 
Elmer T. Lee is a close cousin of two other Buffalo Trace bourbons, Eagle Rare 10-year and Blanton's. If I remember correctly, all three labels come from the same mash and are aged in a similar location in the rickhouse. ETL was one of the few BT/Sazerac brands that wasn't on the shelf here, so I'm happy to see it show up.

Rhum J.M is a Martinique rhum producer; perhaps the best on the island. The level of control they exert over their production process, starting from the sugarcane cultivation in their private estate, could politely be described as "obsessive". The whole line of J.M rhums has BTI scores in the 90s. It's pricey stuff, but it's worth every penny. If you're a fan of the rhum agricole style, Google up some reviews and pick a bottling. Capital listed these with no minimum, so you have no excuse not to order.

This quarter's close-outs have been posted. I'm sad to lose Martell VSOP as that's my preferred mixing cognac, but on the bright side, picking up the remaining stock for $26 a bottle--down from $42--is a hell of a deal. If you like Martell VSOP, buy as much as you can find.

Majestic recently picked up the distribution agreements for both Cognac Ferrand and Preiss Imports, as reflected in many of the new codes above. Preiss carries a number of products familiar to classic and craft cocktail fans, such as Luxardo Maraschino, and several well-loved spirit brands like Springbank and Ypioca.

While Majestic has given us spirit and cocktail enthusiasts some heartache in the past for setting 12-bottle minimums on products like Cynar and Rittenhouse Bonded Rye, I'm pleased to report that they have heard our complaints and Majestic has lowered their SLO minimum to three bottles on all their spirits. This change will be reflected in the PLCB catalog next week. No doubt you will find plenty in their SLO range to fill a three-bottle order.

In other news, some of last month's discontinued in-store products have found their way into SLO availability, including Aalborg Akvavit, Bols Triple Sec and Coeur de Lion Calvados. None of these are particularly marked up over their original in-store price; in fact, the Coeur de Lion is $5 cheaper than when it was on the shelf.

Finally, Sazerac fans will be pleased to see Peychaud's Bitters available at PLCB stores across the state. Personally, I order Peychaud a gallon at a time from the BT website, but for most folks, $6 for 5 oz is much more cost-effective.

Seeing the Catdaddy code get pulled is a little odd, since it's fulfilled directly by Piedmont Distillers. I'm not too fond of it anyway; the bottle states "Grain Neutral Spirits with Natural & Artificial Flavors", and it smells of nutmeg and cloves and tastes like syrupy vodka. This stuff doesn't resemble anything you would call "moonshine" in the slightest. It's not bad though—it could pass as a flavored vodka.

Palateur Imports graciously switched a number of their products from licensee-only to retail, which means PA cocktail enthusiasts now have access to the fantastic El Dorado Demerara rums. "Demerara" rums are produced exclusively in Guyana, where the sole remaining distiller is Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), although there are numerous blending houses such as Banks and Lemon Hart who blend and bottle rums purchased in bulk from DDL. El Dorado is DDL's in-house range that is blended and bottled at the distillery.

It is no exaggeration to say that DDL produces some of the best rums in the world. They are the only distillery to have three bottlings in the top 10 list of Kaiser Penguin's rum expert survey. El Dorado 15-year is the third-highest-ranked rum in the Ministry of Rum member favorites list and Paul Pacult calls it "Highly Recommended" and says it "deserves a place in every serious spirits collection." BTI gave El Dorado 21-year a 98 score—their highest-ever rating for rum. Need I go on?

At the other end of the range, the El Dorado White 3-year is a full-flavored white rum that BTI gave 93 points and called their "Overall Best Value Rum". (Tiare has more on El Dorado 3-year and DDL's operation.) El Dorado 5-year, the dark mixing rum in the line, has a bit different character than its older brothers. Although it is much drier, it still has a robust flavor that is unmistakably Demerara.

Finally, El Dorado 12-year is my personal favorite of the range. It has less depth than the 15-year, but its age and darker cane flavors make it a perfect rum to add spices, wood, and that wonderful up-front Caribbean kick to cocktails. It's a crucial part of my disturbingly delicious Daiquiri combo: 1 oz El Dorado 12-year rum, 1 oz Zaya rum, 3/4 oz lime juice, 3/4 oz simple syrup. Women have fallen in love with me over that Daiquiri. I kid you not.

Also of note is the Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon from Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, which Palateur carries as well. Although I have not tried it personally, my bourbon experts tell me it's an excellent whiskey.

Bakon Vodka is exactly what it sounds like. (Say it out loud.) I like meat-flavored booze as much as anybody, but not at that price—it's too easy to make your own. [Edit 5/7 - Apparently Bakon is artificially flavored and tastes gross. Seriously, don't buy this stuff.]

Conjure is yet another celebrity-affiliated spirit. In this case, Ludacris is shilling some Cognac, and supposedly he helped select the blend himself. How did he do? DrinkHacker has a review blog post, not to mention an awesome flamewar in the comments.

Combier released two new spirits late last year, Royal Combier and Roi René Rouge, and they've finally made it to PA. Royal Combier is a Cognac-based orange liqueur, in the same vein as Grand Marnier but with a more herbal flavor, and Roi René Rouge is a cherry liqueur that sounds promising and I'm anxious to try.

Los Nahuales Mezcal seems to be what Los Danzantes Mezcal renamed itself to. Same spirit, new name. Nothing to see here...

There are some interesting in-store releases here. Ardbeg 10yr, one of my favorite scotches, is finally available on shelves. Nice to see another Islay in stores.

Bacardi seems to be working overtime to come up with new flavors for their rum. After their dragonfruit/strawberry flavor released last year, they have a new flavor out, Torched Cherry. It's made from Barbados cherries and...aloe. No, really. Aloe. I wonder how they came up with that one.

Two of the Nardini grappas showed up in the online store, both of which are highly rated by Wine Enthusiast. Bortolo Nardini is a household name in Italy, producing many of the traditional spirits that Italians consider quintessential to their culinary culture. It's good to see their products becoming available in Pennsylvania.

Two of Haus Alpenz's newer spirits, Smith & Cross rum and Rothman & Winter Cherry Liqueur, are now available by SLO. The Smith & Cross is quite an amazing product--it replicates a traditional Jamaican rum style that hasn't been available in this country for decades. The importer has a fascinating, in-depth description of the style they're trying to recreate. All rum enthusiasts should try this stuff.
