Fragolino Strawberry Liqueur was kind of sexy: it had real strawberries floating in it. I can't imagine that was very good for its shelf life, though.

Relisted:
  • DeKuyper Luscious Apple Barrel Schnapps 750 ML (#008988, Closeout, $5.99)
  • Jannamico Super Punch 1.000 L (#057358, SLO, $26.99)
Ah yeah, Super Punch is back in the catalog. You can let out that sigh of relief.

  • Zyr Vodka 1.000 L (#500986, SLO, $32.29)
Partida is finally available here! This is one of the most highly revered Lowlands tequilas, and I strongly recommend it. It's not for mixing though—it's a gentler tequila whose subtleties would get lost under lime juice. If you're a tequila fan, this belongs on your shelf.
In order to generate the updates I publish every week on this site, I regularly download the entire PLCB spirits catalog and import it into my own database system. This gives me the ability to run many different types of reports against the data besides the usual weekly update. I thought I'd start sharing some of the more interesting ones with you.

Today's report breaks down the spirits available from PLCB stores and SLO vendors by category. These are not the mostly-useless categories that the PLCB uses; they're a custom set that's similar to what private retailers in other states use: Absinthe, American Whiskey, Bourbon, Cachaça, etc. I've hand-sorted all of the PLCB spirit product listings into these categories. I've also removed "duplicate" products—although Tanqueray Gin is listed in six different sizes and two gift packs, it only counts as a single item in the table below.

Note that this table doesn't include wine (except vermouth and aperitifs), non-alcoholic mixers, pre-mixed ("RTD") cocktails, etc. It also doesn't include 35 spirits that I was too lazy to go figure out what they were, like "Gokoo Comfortable Sky" and "Sans Rival Masticha".

**Update (Feb 4): The "In-store" column below includes both spirits available off-the-shelf in retail stores and spirits only available from the PLCB's online store. As a commenter pointed out, this is a bit deceptive, and I'll break out online-only items separately in future reports if possible.

The in-store breakdown is unsurprising. The catch-all category of Cordials and Liqueurs is the largest; followed by flavored vodka; with scotch, unflavored vodka, and tequila in distant third place. Bourbon and flavored and unflavored rums come in fourth, and then everything else together adds up to less than a quarter of the total.

Some old grumbles stand out here. There is not a single pisco available in stores, although at least 20 different labels are imported into the US. Only two cachaças can be found on the shelves, neither of which I recommend. And now that Coeur de Lion has been put on close-out, we're limited to a single Calvados and a single Armagnac. (I would grouch about aquavit too, but there are like five aquavits available in the whole country, and it's not exactly a high-volume market.)

I was surprised to see that almost sixty gins are available, half of them in stores. A quick investigation revealed that half the in-store gins are well brands, but we still have some bright lights in the gin section: Plymouth, Hendrick's, Beefeater 24 and Bluecoat are all nontraditional labels that I'd be quick to recommend. Unfortunately, there are still too few modern gins in stores, and I look forward to the day I can walk into a Wines and Spirits Shoppe and pick up Citadelle, Martin Miller's, North Shore, Aviation, No. 209, Old Raj, and many others.

Let's talk about whiskey. The bourbon fanatics who always complain that there are few decent bourbons available in stores seem to be right. In recent years the state has added a number of high-end Van Winkle bourbons, as well as the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, but other than that, choices are pretty much limited to the the basics: Beam Small Batch labels, BT's mid-range bourbons, Wild Turkey, Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve. Surprisingly, there isn't much bourbon available by SLO—mostly well brands and eclectic labels. The bourbon selection in Pennsylvania leaves much to be desired. (For comparison, Bevmo in California has 87 bourbons available to be purchased off the shelf.)

In comparison, scotch drinkers have less to complain about, scotch being the third largest category for both in-store items and total items. While a selection of 88 scotches is fairly weak compared to larger private retailers, adding in SLO items brings the total to 233. Is it fair to give the PLCB credit for the SLO scotches? More so than for other spirit categories, I think—the in-store selection covers most of the lower-priced scotches, so SLO scotches tend to be expensive enough that distributors will allow retail customers to order single bottles. (Sometimes they need a kick in the tookus to remind them of this. For example, the PLCB website says that Southern wants a minimum order of six bottles of Bowmore 25yr at $187 a pop. This is insane, but it's probably wrong.)

On to my favorite category: rum. I love rum. And, unusually, the PLCB seems to be taking a proactive approach to this fast-growing market. High-end rums on the shelf include not just the heavily-marketed stuff like 10 Cane and Tommy Bahama, but true gems like Appleton Reserve, Mt Gay XO, Matusalem Grand Reserve, Zacapa 23 and Zaya. They even took a chance on a Martinique rum—Clement White—and although it didn't work out, it's unusual to see a niche artisianal product like this show up in stores at all. I hope demand materializes for the other rums, as it would be sad if the PLCB took a gamble on this market segment and Pennsylvania consumers just kept buying Bacardi and Captain Morgan.

The other segment with huge growth at the moment is tequila. Here the PLCB seems to be stuck in 2003. Sure, there are 70 tequilas available on the shelves, but they're mostly the same brands that have been on the shelves for years: Don Julio, Cabo Wabo, Herradura, Patron, and of course all the mixto garbage. Many of the higher-end labels are offshoots of the old giants, like 1800 (Cuervo) and Gran Centenario (Sauza). It's nice to see newer entrants like Corazón and Siembra Azul, but where are the benchmark tequilas that people in other states have been drinking for years? Where are El Tesoro and Partida? Where are Chinaco and AsomBroso? Sure, they're available by SLO, but our tequila drinkers deserve better than that. For now, I just point people to Siete Leguas and leave it at that.

The rest of the categories I can't say much about. Eaux-de-vie seem underrepresented, especially since that category includes kirsch and slivovitz and other fruit distillates; grappas, at least by SLO, seem overrepresented. The cognac selection feels pretty slim, particularly for in-store items, as all but four of those in-store items are from the Big Four cognac houses. It'd be nice to have some Frapin or Ferrand stuff in stores. As for shochu and soju...well...maybe in ten years they'll start catching on.

What can we determine from all this? With the exception of rum, scotch, and of course vodka and flavored spirits, the PLCB in-store spirits selection seems weak. Considering the statutory restrictions under which the PLCB operates, it may be best to resign ourselves to the fact that in-store product selection will probably always be highly conservative. The way things work now, if a product isn't popular enough in the middle of the state, it can't be stocked at either end of the state.

However, with the growing interest in high-end spirits and cocktails in the US, the PLCB may want to consider alternative means for giving retail customers access to speciality products. Reducing the learning curve for the SLO process would be a good start—why can't SLOs be placed through an e-commerce website, instead of requiring a series of coordinating phone calls between the customer, the special purchases section, and the fulfilling distributor? In addition, expanding the range of spirits available through the existing online store should be an easy thing to do, and promoting it more heavily would probably do wonders for online sales.

Well, I hope this analysis has been as interesting to read as it was to write. Leave a comment with your thoughts, and feel free to ask questions or make suggestions for future analyses.

  • Stock Dry Vermouth 750 ML (#005320, Closeout, $3.99)
Magellan Gin disappeared before I had the chance to try it, although it always seemed overpriced since it sells for less than $25 on the west coast. It has a few fans, but to this point it hasn't gained much ground, as far as I can tell.

Tons of Nemiroff products are getting delisted, but there are still tons left. For some reason, most of their products were listed in multiple sizes, which is unusual for an SLO product.

Moved to Closeout:
  • Aalborg Akavit 750 ML (#006534, Closeout, $8.19)
  • Caol Ila Scotch Single Malt 12 Years Old 86 Proof 750 ML (#009778, Closeout, $29.69)
  • Coeur de Lion Calvados 750 ML (#006080, Closeout, $22.59)
  • Laphroaig Scotch 10 Years Old Cask Strength 111 Proof 750 ML (#009181, Closeout, $38.19)
  • Martell V. S. Cognac 375 ML (#004818, Closeout, $9.99)
  • Midori Melon Imp. Liqueur 375 ML (#009053, Closeout, $6.09)
  • Old Overholt Straight Rye 80 Proof 750 ML (#006242, Closeout, $8.89)
  • Royale Montaine Imp. Liqueur 750 ML (#006664, Closeout, $11.49)
  • Stroh 80 Rum Austrian 160 Proof 750 ML (#009875, Closeout, $17.29)
  • Weller Bourbon Antique 750 ML (#009524, Closeout, $12.79)
This week's round of close-out items is rather more disappointing than the last. Aalborg Aquavit is going away, as is Coeur de Lion Selection Calvados, which leaves us with zero aquavits and one Calvados remaining in stores. I'll miss Old Weller 107 dearly, as it's the only wheated bourbon available in PA at a reasonable price for mixing. Old Overholt and Stroh I'm less choked up about, especially since the former continues to be available by SLO from Southern.

Almost all of the items put on close-out have been marked down at crazy discounts, though, so if you like any of them, buy as much as you can find.

Relisted:
  • Charmsoju Korean Wh Liquor 375 ML (#009175, Regular, $4.19)
  • DeKuyper Pucker Cheri Beri Schnapps 750 ML (#008355, Closeout, $6.49)
  • New Amsterdam Gin 80 Proof 200 ML (#007945, One Time, $2.99)
  • O P Anderson Aquavit 750 ML (#070868, SLO, $23.99)
  • Siete Leguas Tequila Blanco 750 ML (#010818, Luxury, $42.99)
  • Tombo Shochu 48 Proof 750 ML (#010887, Luxury, $14.99)
Only a couple of the items above ever actually got delisted; the others were simply hiding--specifically, they got reclassified as "wine" during the PLCB website transition, and I just found 'em again.

New Products:
  • Burnett's Expresso Vodka 1.750 L (#500741, SLO, $21.79)
  • Cruzan Rum Guava 750 ML (#500745, SLO, $13.19)
  • Powers 12 Year Old Reserve Irish Whiskey 80 Proof 750 ML (#010916, Luxury, $34.99)
  • Rivetto Grappa di Nebbiolo 750 ML (#500742, SLO, $53.99)
  • Yokaichi Mugi Shochu 750 ML (#008822, Limit Dist, $15.99)
Powers 12-year is a longer-aged version of the John Power & Son Irish Whiskey (#005763, Regular, $21.99) that few people in this country have ever heard of, but happens to be the top-selling whiskey in Ireland. It's got some good reviews so far, so if you like Irish whiskey it might be worth checking out.

  • Wild Turkey Straight Bourbon 101 Proof 1.000 L (#007883, Closeout, $14.69)
This quarter's close-out items have been posted. Much of the churn is cutting convenience sizes of products that will continue to be available in a standard 750 ML size, and I won't shed a tear over most of the spirits that are disappearing completely. The big exception is Castries Peanut Rum Creme, which, as far as cream liqueurs go, I can't recommend highly enough. I'm sure the $30 price tag is what did it in, but for the $19 close-out price, go get a bottle right now. It is delicious peanuty rummy dessert.

It looks like Admiral Imports is switching from Southern to Majestic in PA, but the Southern codes are still in there so if you're interested in getting some Berentzen Pear Liqueur without having to order twelve bottles, order it from Southern (#056828, SLO, $21.79) before their old stock runs out.

Crusoe Rum, from the makers of TRU organic gin and vodka, stands virtually alone in the organic rum category. The only other organic rum producer I'm aware of is Papagayo who makes a white rum (#068996, SLO, $26.99) and a spiced rum (#069009, SLO, $26.99). I'm surprised this category is as small as it is still, but as rum continues to grow in popularity, I'm sure the producers will catch on.
This happened at some point last week, so I'm a little late to the party, but I'm excited to say that the PLCB added a new field to their public product catalog: the SLO vendor code. I can't fully express what a relief it is to no longer have to acquire and track this data on my own.

Since it's not yet possible to search by vendor code on the PLCB website, I'll continue to provide a product list indexed by vendor on my SLO product page. It's a little unwieldy now that it has 1,400+ products listed, but it'll have to do for the time being.

On an unrelated note, I spoke with D'Andrea Imports, and they assure me that Jannamico Super Punch will continue to be available by SLO, and that if it disappeared from the system it's only a temporary thing.
The PLCB catalog database seems to have settled down enough that I can start posting updates again. This update is cumulative from the last update I posted, so you aren't missing anything.

Super Punch was delisted! The in-store code is still in the system, but it doesn't really seem to be stocked anywhere so that's probably on its way out too. How sad...now I have to horde my remaining bottles.

OP Anderson Aquavit and Barsol Pisco Quebranta were both delisted, hopefully only temporarily, but just in case I'll point out some decent alternatives: North Shore's Aquavit (#040334, SLO, $32.49) is a perfect aquavit for cocktails, and Don Cesar Pisco Italia (#065620, SLO, $36.99) is highly regarded among pisco aficionados. Both are rather more expensive though.

Being a gin fanatic I went looking for information on Hammer Gin, which I'd never heard of before. The first page I found was for the marketing firm that designed the label, named "Kay Why Marketing". Me and my 12-year-old sense of humor spent the next twenty minutes coming up with slogans for them. ("Helping you introduce your big idea into a tight market"? Maybe I should email them.)

There are a few new rums listed, the big one being Appleton's 30-year expression, which is rather out of my price range, and Mount Gay "Sugar Cane Dark" which I can find no information about. Also, for some reason we have duplicate SLO codes for Don Q Cristal and Coconut rum. Hm.

Suntory's Hibiki whisky is available here now, after Suntory decided to finally start exporting the stuff a couple years ago. For decades the only Suntory whisky we could get here in the states was Yamazaki, which is good, but Hibiki is the one that's been winning award after award. (If you saw the movie "Lost in Translation", Hibiki was the whisky that Bill Murray's character was pimping.)
As of yesterday the official PLCB product catalog website appears to be working again. It looks like most if not all of the data is coming from a different database than it previously was, so many of the product names and other descriptive data have changed. (Don't get excited though; product price and status changes since last week look fairly routine. Only the descriptive fields have changed significantly.)

Unfortunately it seems that this new database has about the same or worse accuracy than the old database. Misspellings in product names are still frustratingly common. The "proof" column is filled in for less than two-thirds of the listed spirits now, and many of the values listed are incorrect. Two dozen vintage-dated spirits no longer have the vintage year listed.

I'll email my contacts at the PLCB to get some of these errors fixed, but, as always, exercise care when ordering expensive items for the first time.

No update this week

If you head over to the official PLCB product catalog, you'll notice that they've spiffed up the search interface and there's a little more information on the results page than there used to be. You'll also notice that the SLO products have been temporarily removed from the public-facing database, so they've still got a few bugs to work out with the new backend.

Because of these problems, the product data I have looks rather suspect, and while I can correct the obvious problems by hand, I don't know what other errors are lurking. I've decided to suspend publication of catalog updates until I can trust the public product data again. Let's send the PLCB happy thoughts and maybe things will be fixed by next weekend!
It's our one-year anniversary! I posted the very first PLCB product update a year ago today.

In the coming year I'll continue to bring you product updates with my commentary, as well as new site features that I'll be unveiling in the next week or so. I hope all of you (all ten of you, that is) continue to find the blog helpful and interesting!

Mmm, Monte Alban Mezcal. ("Con gusano" means "with worm". Your reward for finishing the bottle.) Lots of us had bad experiences with Monte Alban when we were younger and wrote off mezcal for good. This is a mistake--like swearing off rum after a bad experience with Bacardi. There is a world of delicious artisianal mezcal out there, with the Del Maguey line being the most widely known.

The different mezcals in the Del Maguey range are produced in different parts of Mexico which each have their own mezcal tradition, so they all end up being distinctly different. Chichicapa (#58559, SLO, $79.99) is light and delicate, while Minero (#58562, SLO, $79.99) is sweet and fruity. The most expensive, Pechuga (#58543, SLO, $202.99), has a peculiar ingredient: an entire raw chicken breast. As usual, Tiare has the story on Del Maguey. At the bar we use the Crema de Mezcal (#57928, SLO, $49.99), which is a liqueur with mezcal blended into it. It's sweet, rich, and smoky--the combination of which can be used to create mind-blowing cocktails.
There weren't many catalog changes this week due to the holiday, but the LCB has been busy transitioning its main website to the new Pennsylvania "enterprise portal" system. Existing web applications like the catalog and event calendar remain unchanged but have moved to a different host. So basically, all of the information and functionality from the old website is still there, but all of our existing bookmarks and links are now broken. Happy New Year!
