Special Edition Update: August 1st Close-outs

Delistings are a topic of concern for many, so I'm posting a "special edition" to list items that were moved to close-out today. For some reason, the PLCB website does not list these items as being on close-out yet, but it does reflect the close-out pricing.

I have marked in boldface those items which we are losing from stores entirely. Non-boldface items will continue to be available in a different bottle size.

There are some great deals here in the large-format sizes. A half-gallon jug of Eagle Rare for $35 will be finding its way to my liquor cabinet shortly.

Other than that, there's not much to say here. The PLCB continues to trim its flavored vodka selection as well as non-standard package sizes that weren't selling.

Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Platino, Matusalem Reserva, and maybe Tomatin should make their way to the online store after in-store stock is sufficiently depleted.

Georgia Moon is getting de-listed. Does this mean we get Mellow Corn???? (Foams at mouth).

I find it odd that the entire line of Kah tequilas is being de-listed. The quality of the product is very nice for the price-point--especially the anejo. I've only seen it on store shelves for barely 2 months. (How can they project sales in such a short period of time? Two months isn't long enough to clear out the bottles I currently have--especially for folks who live and work in a "seasonal" part of the state. Summer in Centre County barely pays the bills.) If they keep it available, I'll be putting it behind my bar at work.

Ethan,

Next listing period is this fall, but I'm shooting to get Mellow Corn on SLO for the time being.

Sc'Eric,

Kah was delisted due to supplier nonperformance. The initial order placed eight months ago still hasn't been fulfilled, and there was no reason to believe the problem was temporary. If the distributor is able to get any in the future, it'll be on SLO.

Thanks for the heads up on the closeouts, Nathan. I got an Eagle Rare for my own self, and a couple JD Single Barrel minis.

Does the PLCB now do the closeout thing on a semi-predictable basis, or is it random? Last one was in January, this one is a tad over six months later.

Ethan, you know I respect your taste in whiskey, but the Mellow Corn is one we don't see eye-to-eye on. My bottle lasted waaay too long...tasted too much like bubble gum to me.

Sam,

New products and delistings are done in tandem now, twice a year. This allows the PLCB a little more negotiating power. For example, they can offer to spare a poorly-performing product they were thinking about delisting in exchange for better pricing on a new product from the same supplier. Then both the new product list and the delisted items are approved together at the same board meeting.

Sam,

I don't take any offense. For some reason, I like the oily, light, un-refined taste of corn whiskey. On the flip side, I can't stomach Eagle Rare. I think it tastes like mold and battery acid. Go figure. But our differences DO point out the gist of what a lot of the privatization people are getting at---- everyone's tastes are different! And for the state to more-or-less deny people of products they like and make it illegal for them to obtain them is crazy! My philosophy- If you're going to control the alcohol, at least make everything order-able or legally obtainable! I think PA should at least carry one decent brand in each category. Since the gut rot Georgia Moon is making an exit stage left, it leaves a hole in the Corn Whiskey category- with only the over-priced and not very tasty Tuthilltown Corn Whiskey being available. I think Mellow Corn not only would be a better seller, but could be more marketable to bars as a mixer since it has some flavor characters. Once Mellow Corn (hopefully!) gets on SLO, I'll probably be the largest single private consumer in the state. I would bathe in the stuff if I knew it wouldn't react with the fiberglass tub!

Excellent take, Ethan, and I agree with you 100%!

Except on the "mold and battery acid" thing...yeesh, you're tough!

Maybe I had a bad bottle, but mine honestly had this odd, overbearing moldy and acidic flavor. It was really gross. I noticed it a little bit in my Weller and Sazerac Rye too. It must be something in their process that my palate picks up and goes wild with. Yay for me.
