Ilegal Mezcal has been a favorite around blogging circles since long before it was available in the US. (I'm not even gonna link anything, just Google for it.) It has a neat back story about the importer smugging the stuff into his Guatemalan tequila bar, hence the name, as well as his fight with the TTB over the name "Ilegal"--you can see the oddly-formatted final label on the TTB site. The mezcal itself is quite good, although much less smokey than you'd expect. It's a great introduction to mezcal for drinkers who are new to the category.

For some reason, Majestic entered a second listing for Pikesville Supreme Rye, this one $4 more than the existing one. I wouldn't be surprised if Heaven Hill was trying to push up the price on this rye like they did with Rittenhouse Bonded, which jumped from $12 to $20 last year.

I really appreciate the effort you put into this site. It saves me a lot of navigation on the PLCB site!

I'm curious why products like Old Overholt and Wild Turkey Rare Breed continue to show up as closeouts when they have been sold out of the system for a year or more. When will their listings finally disappear? It's unnecessarily confusing. It used to be that when they were sold out, the closeout listing disappeared in a timely manner.

Thanks again!

Sam,

Products are listed in the public catalog when the inventory system shows stock in at least one store. For some reason, a single bottle of this or that will inexplicably appear in a store's inventory, which means a sold-out product like Overholt will reappear in the catalog at random, and when this happens, it gets automatically posted in my weekly update. Benedictine has come and gone ten times over the last 12 months, even though it was put on close-out more than three years ago.

Keeping track of spirits in PA is about to get a bit more complicated as the PLCB rolls out their new specialty spirits program, so I'm going to be changing the format of my weekly blog posts soon anyway. This should take care of the flip-flopping close-out items.

Yeah, I figured that was it but it's also the PLCB's own stubborn fault. I've shown up at a store where a single bottle of a closeout was listed and they said the bottle had been broken and couldn't be removed from the inventory (no idea why they can't). I guess precision (or at least eventual surrender on a particular product) is just too much to ask from an incredibly ingrained bureaucracy.

Can't wait for them to be eliminated, some sweet day. Sorry. At least the American whiskey selection is finally increasing slightly after years of relentless elimination.
