June 2011 Archives

PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of June 20th:

New in-store and online products:
  • Boomsma Jonge Genever Gin Holland 750ML (#030704, Online, $27.99)
  • Comandon Cognac VSOP 750ML (#030578, Online, $38.99)
  • Comandon Cognac XO 750ML (#030579, Online, $135.99)
If Bols Genever and Anchor Genevieve are too "malty" for you, Boomsma might be more your style. It's less aggressive, a bit sweeter, and a few dollars cheaper.

Comandon continues its march into PA, with the VSOP and XO expressions hitting the online store following the arrival of the VS in stores in May. Tasting Panel Magazine thinks this brand is going to be hot stuff in 2011, and they rated the XO a 96.

Products back in stock online:
  • Four Roses Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey 750ML (#010880, Online, $39.99)
This fine specimen of a bourbon has proved to be a popular product in specialty spirits stores across the state. If you can't find it near you, it's again available online.

Delisted SLO products:
  • Margaritaville Tropical Tangerine 750 ML (#065642, SLO, $13.49)
  • Talisker Scotch 18 Year 750 ML (#513057, SLO, $64.99)

Reactivated SLO products:
  • Berentzen Apple Schnapps 750 ML (#512435, SLO, $19.99)
  • Laphroaig Cairdeas Single Malt Scotch 12 Year Old 750 ML (#513098, SLO, $62.69)
  • Skyy Passion Fruit Vodka Infusion 1 L (#067272, SLO, $20.89)
Southern tells me that the 2011 edition of Laphroaig Cairdeas is being made officially available in the US for the first time. Pennsylvania is one of only nine states receiving any. Contrary to what I said a couple weeks ago, there will actually be 300 bottles available for PA. Some of it might go to the online store but that hasn't been decided yet.

New SLO products:
  • Danny Devitos Lemoncello 750 ML (#513470, SLO, $26.69)
  • Glen Scotia 12 Year Single Malt Scotch 750 ML (#513499, SLO, $75.99)
  • Hirsch 20 Year Rye Whiskey 750 ML (#513506, SLO, $63.99)
  • Hirsch Straight Bourbon Small Batch 28 Year 750 ML (#513497, SLO, $474.99)
  • Kalani Coconut Liqueur 750 ML (#513498, SLO, $24.49)
  • Lucid Absinthe Superieure 750 ML (#513502, SLO, $74.99)
  • Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey 750 ML (#513500, SLO, $69.99)
  • Patron Tequila Anejo 1.75 L (#513471, SLO, $132.19)
A few more Preiss Imports products were put on SLO. Kalani Coconut Liqueur is, without a doubt, the most delicious coconut liqueur I've ever tasted. It's vibrant and true to the nut without being cloying or artificial. In addition, the availability of Old Potrero Rye should make a few folks happy--it's in such high demand that it's nearly impossible to find any.

Lots of exciting new online products this week. XXX Shine, the new unaged corn whiskey from Philadelphia Distilling, is on its way to the regular in-store section, but if you're in a hurry to get it you can order some from FWGS. On the other hand Don Cesar Puro was already in the specialty selection, but now you can order it if you live in a rural area with no specialty store nearby.

Products back in stock online:
  • Neisson Agricole Blanc Rum Martinique 1.0L (#030986, Online, $30.99)
This section of the weekly report, "Products back in stock online," is a new addition. It's exactly what it sounds like--if a product disappears from the online store for longer than a few days, it'll show up on this list when it's available again.

Delisted SLO products:
  • Johnnie Walker Red 50 ML (#051237, SLO, $2.49)

  • Zucca Rabarbaro Amaro 1 L (#513368, SLO, $27.49)
...only to return as a Laird code. That's right, folks--Lemon Hart 151 is back! This is the new and improved Lemon Hart that's blended right at the distillery in Guyana. (If you've never heard of Lemon Hart before, Brian Tierney has some background in his recent City Paper article, in which yours truly was quoted.)

Laird picked up Cardamaro and Zucca Rabarbaro as well. These two amari are new to US shores and are generating quite a bit of interest in the craft cocktail scene. Cardamaro is wine infused with cardoon and blessed thistle, rather light on the bitter, giving it more of an aperitif character. Zucca is a more traditional amaro made with rhubarb and plenty of botanics, so it has the deep, herbal flavor that you'd expect from amari. Since you're ordering some Lemon Hart from Laird anyway, why not pick up a bottle of each of these?

Weekly Catalog Update for 6/6

PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of June 6th:

New in-store and online products:
  • Kah Anejo Tequila 750 ML (#003638, Regular, $54.99)
  • Kah Blanco Tequila 750 ML (#003642, Regular, $42.99)
  • Kah Reposado Tequila 750 ML (#003644, Regular, $49.99)
  • Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year Old Bourbon 750ML (#010849, Online, $249.89)
  • U'Luvka Vodka Gift Set with 2 Glasses 750ML (#030519, Online, $44.99)
  • Van Winkle Whiskey 12 Years Old Special Reserve 750ML (#009530, Online, $49.99)
The first thing most people notice about the Kah tequilas is that they come in a creepy skull. The bottles are modelled after the traditional calaveras made for Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations, resulting in product packaging reminiscent of a bad acid trip. Check 'em out. (If you think Kah looks a lot like Crystal Head Vodka, you're not the only one. Globefill, Crystal Head's parent company, took them to court and lost.) [Edit 6/15: Kah tequila is being pulled from stores due to supply issues.]

Two more limited-release whiskeys from Buffalo Trace hit the online store this week, Van Winkle 12-year and Van Winkle 23-year. I don't expect these to sell out as quickly as the other whiskeys that arrived recently, but you never know. Order now if you want some.

Delisted SLO products:
  • Berentzen Apple Schnapps 750 ML (#512435, SLO, $19.99)

  • Pisco Barsol Acholado Blue Label 750 ML (#054845, SLO, $20.59)
Barsol Pisco recently moved from Southern to Capital, so hopefully it will be available again soon. In the mean time, pick up some Don Cesar Puro at a specialty spirits store and see if it suits your fancy.

New SLO products:
  • 1800 Tequila Coleccion 750 ML (#513217, SLO, $1887.29)
  • Bacardi Rum Arctic Grape 1 L (#513201, SLO, $20.79)
Bacardi's newest flavor, Arctic Grape, will probably be hitting store shelves this summer. If you're in a hurry to get it, you can SLO three or more liters.
PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of May 30th:

New in-store and online products:
  • Buffalo Trace Distillery Single Oak Project 375ML (#030772, Online, $48.99)
  • Marie Brizard Grand Orange Liqueur 750ML (#010908, Online, $24.99)
BT's Single Oak Project is, in their words, "the most extensive bourbon experiment ever undertaken." Ten years ago, BT hand selected 96 different oak trees to turn into 192 barrels, then assigned each barrel a different combination of mash recipe, char level, entry proof, and other factors that could affect the whiskey's flavor. Now they are releasing the aged whiskeys, 12 at a time, and are encouraging people to try them and report their tasting notes on the Single Oak Project website.

The first release, this spring, consisted of twelve of the 192 barrels. Pennsylvania received three bottles from each barrel, which were put in the online store. They sold out in about 24 hours. Reminder: if you haven't yet, follow me on Twitter to receive near-real-time notifications when new items hit the online store.

Marie Brizard Grand Orange is an orange liqueur/cognac blend in the style of Grand Marnier. I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard favorable comments about it.

  • Talisker Scotch 18 Year 750 ML (#513057, SLO, $64.99)
Laphroaig CĂ irdeas is a very limited bottling, released once a year for the Feis Ile Islay Festival of Music and Malt. Don't bother trying to order it though--Southern just brought in a bottle or two and has already delisted it. [Edit 6/28: This is incorrect; there are 300 bottles available for PA. See this post for more info.]
A handful of people emailed me privately to express their frustration that they didn't find out about the Rittenhouse Rye in the online store until it was sold out. I imagine most folks don't have the time or inclination to hit up the "New Products" page in the online store several times a day just in case something comes in, so I created two ways for you to keep tabs on newly-stocked spirits.

The most timely source of updates will be my new Twitter account, aptly named "plcbusersgroup". This will mostly contain notifications of new online products, as well as occasional breaking news that can't wait for the weekly update.

For old school users who don't do the whole Twitter thing, there is also an RSS feed (Atom, actually) where new online products will be posted, including descriptions:

http://plcbusersgroup.org/fwgs/atom.xml

Both Twitter and the RSS feed will be updated every 20 minutes. Keep in mind that your Twitter client or RSS reader may not check for updates that frequently, however.
PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of May 23rd:

New in-store and online products:
  • Bulleit Rye 750 ML (#030682, Online, $27.99)
  • G'Vine Floraison Gin France 750 ML (#030671, Online, $29.99)
  • G'Vine Nouaison Gin France 750 ML (#030670, Online, $32.99)
  • L'Esprit de June Liqueur France 750 ML (#030672, Online, $28.99)
  • Whistle Pig 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey Vermont 750 ML (#030668, Online, $69.99)
First, an administrative note. I changed some of my data import tools to make online items show up in the product guide more reliably, so if you spot any problems, please leave a comment and let me know.

A handful of Domaine Select products arrived in the online store this week. The G'Vine gins are extremely French: distilled from grapes, aggressively floral and fruity, and so flamboyant as to be controversial. They're about as far from the London Dry style as they can get while still being recognizable as gin, which means cocktail drinkers either love 'em or hate 'em. Technically speaking, though, they're superb and have received excellent reviews across the board. G'Vine is worth trying once, to see if you fall in love with it or scrunch up your face and mix the rest of the bottle with A-Treat. Visit the G'Vine website to read what makes Floraison different from Nouaison.

Esprit de June is a relatively new liqueur made from the same spirit base as G'Vine. The primary flavoring is flowers from several grape varieties, putting it in the same category as St. Germain. The final result is a bit flat and overly sweet, but it could be workable as a mixer.

The last DSWE product in the list is WhistlePig Rye. This rye was quite talked-about last summer after its introduction at WhiskyFest Chicago, and not just because it's delicious. It's bottled by Dave Pickerell, former master distiller of Maker's Mark, who started his own whiskey company in Vermont a couple years ago.

Rather than going down to Heaven Hill or Brown-Forman and picking up some bulk bourbon to blend and bottle as most new whiskey companies do these days, Dave went to Canada and found some 100% rye whiskey that was intended to be used in minute quantities as a flavoring agent in some Canadian Whisky blend. (Yes, Mr. Pickerell went from making one of the few bourbons that contains 0% rye to selling a whiskey that's 100% rye.) Although this whiskey was never meant to be drank straight, it's well-balanced, complex and quite enjoyable on its own. Here's a random review which pretty much sums up what's in the bottle. Wine Enthusiast gave it an exceptional 96 points.

Does that justify the $70 price tag? Well...that might be a bit on the expensive side for a 10-year-old whiskey, but who am I to argue with all the whiskey fans snapping the stuff up?

Also this week, Bulleit Rye finally arrived in the online store. It's a few weeks past when we expected to have it, but hey, it could be worse: I still haven't received the two bottles I SLO'd in April.

Tom Bulleit reportedly spent seven years developing his rye, and it seems to have been time well spent. The whiskey comes from Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana (LDI), not to be confused with the Four Roses distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, where Bulleit Bourbon is made. (Interestingly, LDI and Four Roses use the same high-rye bourbon mash recipe, as both distilleries used to be owned by Seagram.)

The result is, without a doubt, the best LDI rye I've tasted yet. Most ryes sourced from LDI, such as Templeton, taste overwhelmingly of the grain and are bottled far too soon. Tom manages to pull ahead of the rest, with a nicely put together whiskey that I'm very much looking forward to drinking. As soon as my SLO gets here.

On a final note, there is one rye missing from the list above: five cases of Rittenhouse Bonded Rye were listed in the online store Thursday morning. It sold out within four hours. Yes, Pennsylvania's entire spring allocation of Rittenhouse was gone in half a day. (Another five cases went to licensees by SLO.)

Frustrating, to say the least. Please direct your complaints to Heaven Hill. The head of Majestic Wine and Spirits, the Pennsylvania distributor, had to make an in-person plea to get our allocation increased from two cases last fall to ten cases this spring. Out of the 1000+ barrels that were dumped, Heaven Hill could only spare ten cases for the whiskey's home state? What's a guy gotta do to get a drink around here?

The Comb spirits are actually distilled from honey, lending them an unusual sweet, somewhat floral nose.

Hot on the tail of Pinnacle Cake Vodka, the full line of Cupcake Vodka flavors are here. I'll leave the commentary to Eater.com, who writes "Cupcake Vodka Merges Foodie Guilt and Alcoholic Shame Into One Sad Vortex of Misery".
