November 2010 Archives

PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of November 15th:

New in-store and online products:
  • Buffalo Trace White Dog Mash 1 Whiskey 375 ML (#030570, Online, $16.99)
  • Pinnacle Whipped Cream Flavored Vodka 1.75 L (#003084, Regular, $25.99)
The online store got a few cases of BT's "white dog"--their unaged distillate. It's not something I'd drink regularly, but it can be used effectively in cocktails, and whiskey fans will find it interesting to taste in comparison with BT's whiskeys.

New-to-store items (previously online-only):
  • Barenjager Honey Liqueur 750 ML (#010472, Limit Dist, $27.99)
  • Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey 750 ML (#010920, Limit Dist, $39.99)
  • Germain Robin Select Barrel Brandy XO California 750 ML (#010879, Limit Dist, $99.99)
  • Partida Tequila Blanco 750 ML (#010918, Limit Dist, $52.99)
Despite years of great press, Germain-Robin produces some of the most under-appreciated brandies in the world. They make their brandy from higher-quality grapes than most brandy producers (including those in Cognac, France) and the results are astounding. Check out their website for some "mind-blowing reviews".

In-store products moved to closeout:
  • Azul Reposado Tequila 750 ML (#008731, Regular, $21.99)
  • Gran Centenario Rosangel Reposado Tequila 750 ML (#004941, Regular, $32.99)
  • Sweet Carolina Peach Sweet Tea 1.75 L (#003229, Regular, $26.99)
  • White Diamond Vodka - Latvia 1 L (#009352, Regular, $8.09)
I'm sad to see the Rosangel go. It's a unique product and a great way to get novices into tequila. Unfortunately it's on the pricey side for what it is.

Delisted SLO products:
  • Ballantines Scotch 12yr 750 ML (#071878, SLO, $15.49)
  • Chartreuse Yellow 750 ML (#067770, SLO, $53.99)
  • Haymans Old Tom Gin 750 ML (#064412, SLO, $24.99)
  • Navip Slivovitz 750 ML (#064897, SLO, $22.29)
  • Rothman Winters Liqueurs Creme de Violette 750 ML (#064407, SLO, $23.99)
  • Smith and Cross Traditional Jamaican Rum 750 ML (#502041, SLO, $26.99)
With the exception of the Ballantines, these are all coming to specialty spirits stores soon.

New SLO products:
  • Junior Johnsons Midnight Moon Apple Pie 750 ML (#507456, SLO, $19.99)
  • Junior Johnsons Midnight Moon Cherry 750 ML (#507457, SLO, $19.99)
  • Junior Johnsons Midnight Moon Strawberry 750 ML (#507454, SLO, $19.99)
  • Montenegro Amaro 750 ML (#507511, SLO, $30.99)
  • Tequila 55 Anejo 50 ML (#502629, SLO, $2.19)
  • Tequila 55 Anejo 750 ML (#502633, SLO, $24.69)
  • Tequila 55 Blanco 50 ML (#502631, SLO, $2.09)
  • Tequila 55 Blanco 750 ML (#502635, SLO, $17.69)
  • Tequila Capaz Anejo 1 L (#502632, SLO, $22.09)
  • Tequila Capaz Blanco 50 ML (#502630, SLO, $2.09)
  • Tequila Capaz Blanco 1 L (#502634, SLO, $16.69)

Weekly Catalog Update for 11/8

PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of November 8th:

New in-store and online products:
  • Alexander Grappa di Moscato Veneto 750 ML (#030588, Limit Dist, $28.99)
  • Alexander Grappa Veneto 750 ML (#030589, Limit Dist, $29.99)
  • Alexander Platinum Grappa Veneto 750 ML (#030585, Limit Dist, $44.99)
  • Chartreuse Green Vep 5 Year Old Herbal Liqueur 1 L (#030938, Online, $149.99)
  • Chartreuse Yellow Vep 5 Year Old Herbal Liqueur 1 L (#030937, Online, $149.99)
  • Cinzano Rosso Vermouth Veneto Italy 1 L (#030940, Limit Dist, $8.99)
  • Cinzano Vermouth Extra Dry Veneto Italy 1 L (#030941, Limit Dist, $8.99)
  • Jim Beam White PET 1.75 L (#003863, One Time, $25.99)
  • Pisa After Dinner Nut Liquore 750 ML (#030944, Limit Dist, $20.99)
  • Plymouth Sloe Gin England 750 ML (#030586, Limit Dist, $27.99)
  • Schladerer Kirschwasser Germany 750 ML (#030943, Limit Dist, $37.99)
  • Schladerer Williams Birne Pear Brandy Germany 750 ML (#030942, Limit Dist, $37.99)
The PLCB filled out the Alexander Grappa vertical, adding the Moscato, Platinum, and "original flavor" to the Alexander Grappa di Cabernet that has been on the shelf for a while. Alexander puts out some affordable grappas that are fantastic for the price. If your first experience with grappa was with Julia or some other rot-gut, Alexander will show you what real grappa is like.

The Schladerer eaux-de-vie fill a similar niche. Eaux-de-vie are touchy spirits, very difficult to get right. Quality varies widely, and some producers opt to discard their entire production for a season if they're unable to meet the distiller's standards. As a result, eaux-de-vie can easily run into $100+ per bottle territory. Schladerer has been doing this long enough that they can make a consistent product at a reasonable price, without having to resort to additives like sugar and flavoring compounds. Their Kirsch and Pear Williams are welcome additions to specialty spirit stores, superseding the low-quality Koenig eaux-de-vie that were available previously.

In the same vein: Plymouth Sloe Gin. This is real sloe gin, made from real sloe berries using a traditional English recipe. It has a completely different flavor from the artificially-flavored garbage that big cordial producers put out. If you're making classic cocktails, this is the only sloe gin you should be using. Even better, at $27.99 PA has the best price I can find in the nation. It runs as high as $48 in New York!

Last, I should mention the Chartreuse VEP that showed up online. As if regular Chartreuse weren't delicious enough, the monastery makes an oak-aged version of both the green and yellow that they label VEP. The aging, as you'd expect, mellows the harsher flavors of the spirit and adds richness to the aroma. VEP is spendy at $149.99 but anybody who enjoys Chartreuse should try the VEP at least once in their lives. I suggest getting some friends together to split up the one-liter bottle.

Codes moved from Close-out to Limit Dist:
  • Aalborg Akvavit 750 ML (#006534, Limit Dist, $17.99)
For logistical convenience, the PLCB took the old Aalborg code off of close-out since Aalborg will be placed in specialty spirits stores. That means there are two Aalborg codes, one for in-store product and one for online product.

In-store products moved to closeout:
  • Tommy Bahama Light Rum 1.75 L (#003083, One Time, $19.99)
  • Tommy Bahama White Sand Light Rum 750 ML (#009059, Regular, $17.99)
I'm a bit sad to see this go, but the product was kind of destined for failure. Tommy Bahama is one of those "image brands" whose name is the sole justification for charging high prices for their mediocre-quality products. Except in this case, the product is actually quite good. Tommy Bahama rums are made by the Foursquare Distillery whose rums are of consistently high quality. Read Rumdood's review if you don't believe me.

So why did it fail in this market? My guess is that their target demographic, being image-focused as they are, continues to cling to Bacardi as their rum of choice due to its entirely undeserved status as being "the" rum to drink. Other consumers perceive Tommy Bahama Rum to be a marketing gimmick and assume it is overpriced. A sad end to an underappreciated product.

Delisted SLO products:
  • Lazzaroni Amaretto 750 ML (#050573, SLO, $14.59)
  • Midleton Rare Irish Whiskey 750 ML (#062866, SLO, $144.29)
  • Whipped Lighting Amaretto Whipahol 375 ML (#506050, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lighting German Chocolate Whipahol 375 ML (#506054, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lighting Hazelnut Espresso Whipahol 375 ML (#506056, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lighting White Chocolate Raspberry Whipahol 375 ML (#506052, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lightning Caramel Pecan Whipahol 375 ML (#506053, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lightning Spiced Vanilla Whipahol 375 ML (#506051, SLO, $9.89)
  • Whipped Lightning Strawberry Colada Whipahol 375 ML (#506055, SLO, $9.89)
Lazzaroni Amaretto, which is the only amaretto that you should buy, moved from Majestic to Laird. You should order a bottle from Laird immediately. It is delicious.

The Whipped Lightning products, although they were just listed a few weeks ago, can't be sold at the moment while the federal government revisits its approvals for the stuff. Hopefully it won't be held up too long--it's a clever product that people have a lot of fun with.

New SLO products:
  • Van Gogh Wild Appel Vodka 750 ML (#507219, SLO, $21.99)
  • Westford Hill Distillers Fraise 200 ML (#507296, SLO, $26.09)
  • Westford Hill Distillers Framboise 200 ML (#507295, SLO, $26.09)
  • Westford Hill Distillers Kirsch 200 ML (#507294, SLO, $16.79)
  • Westford Hill Distillers Pear William Eau de Vie Pear Brandy 200 ML (#507293, SLO, $18.29)
Westford Hill is a new craft distillery in Connecticut who has taken on the weighty task of creating an eau-de-vie line. I wish them luck with that; hopefully they'll do better than other craft distillers have.

Weekly Catalog Update for 11/1

PLCB spirits catalog changes for the week of November 1st:

New in-store and online products:
  • Compass Box Asyla Scotch Whiskey 750 ML (#030945, Limit Dist, $44.99)
  • Compass Box Oak Cross Scotch 750 ML (#031000, Limit Dist, $45.99)
  • Compass Box Orangerie Scotch Whiskey 750 ML (#030946, Limit Dist, $42.99)
  • Compass Box Peat Monster Malt Scotch Whisky 750 ML (#005715, Limit Dist, $52.99)
  • Creme Yvette Delicieuse Liqueur France 750 ML (#030980, Limit Dist, $45.99)
  • Glenkinchie 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch 750 ML (#030947, Limit Dist, $44.99)
  • Oronoco Reserve Rum Brazil 750 ML (#030950, Limit Dist, $29.99)
  • Pierre Ferrand Cognac Ambre France 750 ML (#030949, Limit Dist, $43.99)
The in-store specialty selection is rolling out in full force now. Distribution is uneven as products are still arriving, but eventually all 32 specialty spirits stores will stock the same items. Check this Google map to find your nearest store.

Several of the highly-acclaimed Compass Box blended scotches came in this week. The PLCB had to beat up the distributor a bit to get prices down to this level, but the current pricing is pretty competitive with other retailers nationally.

If you're a fan of scotch and you've never tried Compass Box before, you're missing out. Many scotch drinkers dismiss blended scotches out of hand, but in fact the depth and range of flavor that can be achieved through skilfully blending different malts exceeds what a single distillery can produce, at least at any reasonable price.

John Glaser, the master blender, learned the art of blending at Johnnie Walker before founding Compass Box in 2000. John Hansell of Malt Advocate describes Mr. Glaser as one of "a couple individuals who continue to impress me. [...] He, in many ways, created a whole new concept in whiskymaking, producing artisanal whiskies through the meticulous, passionate marrying of small-production, high-quality whiskies." As one of the most widely-respected blenders in the scotch world, Mr. Glaser constantly receives awards and good reviews for his blends. Visit the Compass Box website for descriptions of each of their whiskies.

Oronoco Reserve is a flavorful white rum produced in Brazil. "Brazilian Rum" is generally a euphemism for cachaça, due to the US government's failure to recognize cachaça as its own spirit category, but in this case we actually are talking about rum. And delicious rum it is. Oronoco is one of the most flavorful white rums I have ever encountered, with an aroma of vanilla, sugar cane and custard. Diageo initially priced Oronoco a little too high, reaching $35 or $45 in some markets, but $30 is fairly reasonable especially considering the swanky bottle. Check out Rumdood's review for a picture and more tasting notes.

Pierre Ferrand is one of my two favored cognac lines, the other being Martell. I've always been disappointed that Ferrand wasn't available on the shelf in PA, but fortunately the PLCB agreed that it belonged in stores. Ambre is their entry-level cognac, with a light body and an aroma of flowers and honey.

New-to-store items (previously online-only):
  • Caribou Crossing Single Barrel Canadian Whiskey 750 ML (#010559, Limit Dist, $49.99)
  • Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth Italy 1 L (#010833, Limit Dist, $36.99)
  • Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Bourbon 750 ML (#010521, Limit Dist, $32.99)
  • Martin Miller's Westbourne Strength Gin England 750 ML (#030997, Limit Dist, $34.99)
  • Milagro Silver Select Barrel Reserve Tequila 750 ML (#030982, Limit Dist, $49.99)
I've mentioned Carpano Antica Vermouth in passing before, but it deserves a full treatment now that it's in stores. Its namesake, Antonio Benedetto Carpano, was the first to produce vermouth on a commercial scale in the late 18th century. The Carpano family has made vermouth ever since, with their most well-known product being Punt e Mes, but a few years ago they brought their "Antica formula" vermouth to the US. Supposedly made with the same recipe Antonio used, Carpano Antica is a crushingly flavorful aperitif and something of a secret ingredient in craft-bar Manhattans. Its aroma is spicy and earthy, with citrus and too many herbs to identify. The flavor is explosively botanical, sweet but not overly so, and satisfyingly bitter. To borrow a cliché, Carpano Antica will challenge your preconceptions about vermouth. If you like bitter flavors, buy yourself a bottle. You'll be blown away.

Martin Miller's gin has been around for 10 years or so now, and the brand carefully positions themselves as being an exclusive product. Their production process is a bit gimmicky, involving Icelandic glacier water, but the bottom line is that it's an excellent, well-balanced gin that suits my picky standards for use in Martinis. The "Westbourne Strength" is boosted in proof a bit from the regular bottling, to good effect. With 96 points it ties for top place among BTI's gin reviews.

  • Wolfschmidt Vodka 80 Proof 1 L (#507026, SLO, $10.29)
Most people only know Avión tequila from the HBO show Entourage, in which one of the characters spends most of the seventh season starting a tequila company. The story is fiction, but the brand is real--you can read about this interesting new form of product placement at the New York Post. With that kind of marketing, you'd think the quality of the product would be an afterthought, but Drinkhacker was very impressed.

Belvedere is taking another stab at the post-vodka world with an unfiltered vodka that appears to be something like a grain eau-de-vie. In other words, unaged whiskey. Their last attempt at post-vodka was Belvedere IX, which is grain neutral spirits re-distilled with botanical ingredients, or in other words, gin. I'll give them credit for embracing the future better than other vodka brands, but it remains to be seen whether their loyal customers are interested in branching out, or if non-vodka drinkers can be enticed to the Belvedere brand.

Copper Fox Rye is a young-aged rye made by Rick Wasmund at his distillery in Sperryville, Virginia. Like his Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky, Copper Fox Rye has received mixed reviews and people seem to love it or hate it. Google up some reviews to see if it would be to your liking.
