The summer product release is here! It's like Christmas in July!

Most exciting is the Appleton Reserve, which is a new-ish rum in the Appleton line between Appleton V/X and Appleton Extra, and intended to be an entry-level sipping rum. Unless you're serious enough about your rums to order the Appleton Extra (#62499, SLO, $37.29), I recommend picking up the Appleton Reserve.

Cruzan Dark, Cruzan Light, Hendrick's Gin and Bulleit Bourbon are now available in 1.75L bottles. You'll only save $1 buying the Bulleit this way, but you'll save about $7 on the others.

Gran Centenario Azul is a well-reviewed 100% agave tequila, and stands with Lunazul (no relation) as the cheapest decent reposado at $21.99. The next step up would be Hornitos at $26.99.

Finally, the undisputed champion of eye-catching bottles, Crystal Head Vodka, will now be available on store shelves. The bottle itself is almost (but not quite) worth the price.

Zubrowka is back, finally, after a brief time on store shelves last year. Presumably it's the Bak's brand, although Polmos makes Zubrowka as well. I got all excited about Zubrowka last year and bought a bunch when it was put on closeout, but now I'm not so sure what to do with it. Perhaps I'll provide a bottle to Dr. Bamboo to work his unloved-ingredient magic and come up with a good cocktail.

Contrary to popular belief, I haven't, in fact, disappeared from the face of the Earth. I did skate off to New Orleans last week for the fabulously over-the-top Tales of the Cocktail, where I met pretty much everyone who's anyone in the cocktail world. Very sad news here...the Mae de Ouro cachaca was discontinued. I heard a rumor (from another cachaca producer) that the Mae distillery is bankrupt and no longer operating. I guess I've got until the end of my half-empty bottle to find a new favorite cachaca.

The delisted "Canton Ginger Liqueur" is Domaine de Canton, I believe, which has been available in stores for the better part of a year (#10819, Regular, $29.99).

The Seagrams sweet tea vodka has been pulled temporarily as Capital hasn't been able to get any stock since they listed it. It should be back by the end of July.

A surprising number of brandies have been discontinued in the last year or so. I guess brandy just doesn't sell like it used to. No big deal to me, since I almost always use cognac in recipes which call for brandy.

Interesting to see the Genevieve back after getting delisted at the end of 2008. It has the distinction of being the only genever-style product available in Pennsylvania, but I can't recommend it for two reasons: first, it's an abusive, punchy genever that doesn't seem to work that well in classic Holland gin recipes; second, it's really overpriced--in other states it sells for less than $33.

I also must take this opportunity to recommend Dolin vermouth again. If you're a martini drinker, order the 375ML bottle of it just to try it out. Laird has no required minimum quantity for SLOs, and spending an extra $4 over the price of Martini+Rossi is a no-brainer. Try making your martini with three parts good gin, like Plymouth or Tanqueray #10, perhaps, to one part Dolin dry vermouth. You'll never go back. (As with any vermouth, keep the open bottle in the fridge sealed with a vacuum cork and toss it after a month.)

Well. This is interesting. Southern listed the 80-proof Lemon Hart Demerara rum. They've carried the Lemon Hart 151 (#63719, SLO, $26.49) forever and used to carry the 80-proof some years ago, but now they have both of them again. What makes this interesting is the persistent on-again-off-again rumor that Lemon Hart has been discontinued, and nobody (including those at Pernod Ricard, who run the brand) has been able to give an official answer one way or the other. I've also heard from the PLCB special purchases section that Southern is out of stock on the Lemon Hart 151 but is expecting more in late July. Unless further information is forthcoming, I'd recommend buying any Lemon Hart you can, just in case.

It's good to see the Bols cordials coming back. They're a decent "backup" label when Marie Brizard doesn't have what you want, and they're about half the price. I'd like to see the distributor, probably Southern, bring back the orange curacao as that's the most useful for classic cocktails, but the rest of the flavors are generally considered reliable.

OP Anderson is only the second aquavit available here in PA, the other being the sporadically-available Aalborg (#06534, Limit Dist, $13.99). OP is a Swedish-style aquavit, so it has a lighter body to it, and it's my preferred aquavit to use in cocktails. Both Aalborg and OP are produced by Vin & Sprit AB of Sweden, and, unsurprisingly, Vin & Sprit is owned by Pernod Ricard.

Brugal Extra Viejo is a Dominican rum that's been produced for a few years but only imported in the US in 2009. I haven't tried it myself, but from what I've read, if you like Brugal Anejo (#04640, Regular, $17.99), paying a few more dollars for the Extra is worthwhile.

Finally, a note on the Milagro tequilas that were just listed--these listings are substantially more than the in-store listings for Milagro. That's because the new listings are for the "Select Barrel Reserve" range rather than the standard range available in stores. Unfortunately I couldn't find a description on on the Milagro website as to what makes the SBR products worth more than twice the price of the standard range.
